Vexen
Stats
Nicknames: The Chilly Academic; Number IV
Age: Approx. ~35
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Unconcerned.
Alignment: Organization XIII
World: Radiant Garden
In Battle
Weapon: Frozen Pride, a blue kite shield made of ice.
Fighting Style: Powers: Vexen has dominion over ice, and is quite skilled at using the element in battle not just effectively, but creatively. As he is not fond of putting himself in harm's way he tends to favor indirect attacks; however, he is not completely useless in melee, as he is every bit as skilled in using his shield offensively as he is at hiding behind it. Unfortunately, his element tends to be rather brittle, and all of his weapons as well as his shield end up being glass cannons. Not to mention there's not much he can do against Fire-based attacks...
Abilities:
- Freeze - By focusing his powers on a single stationary target, Vexen can trap it in thick layers of ice.
- Ice Needles - Touching a surface allows Vexen to summon large icicles to jut out of it (i.e. the ground, walls, etc)
- Slide Break - Channeling his power into his shield, he can create a large blade of ice and use it as a sword. Being made of ice, however, only gives it limited use: it will shatter after a few hits.
- Diamond Dust - While this technique exhausts a great deal of energy, it is well worth it in terms of power, creating a violent icestorm in the immediate area that freezes just about everything.
Weakness: Anything fire. It burns. A lot. And kinda hurts. Also Keyblades. They only burn sometimes, but they still hurt. Lastly, he is allergic to cummingtonite.
Inside Their Mind
Personality: Analytic to a fault, Vexen sees the world and everything around him in terms of cold, hard science. Logic dictates his actions and way of thinking, and most of the problems he comes across he solves through systematic experiments. The scientific method is the best method, after all, and he's not shy about applying it to about everything he approaches. Perhaps this clinical approach could be attributed to a need to keep things orderly and predictable, or perhaps it's from a fear of getting too involved. Indeed, it would not be too far from the truth to suggest that fear has a hand in several aspects of his character.
With order being such a high priority, it's no wonder that he places so much emphasis on rank and social position. Vexen is quick to point out his position in the Organization in an effort to gain respect, and tends to make enemies by reminding the lower-ranked members that they're 'below him' -- and it doesn't help that he's quick to criticize and quicker to get defensive. But his pretentiousness and condescending attitude towards others are relatively superficial; at the root of his personality lies a web of insecurity so strong that he seems to fall to pieces without respect or rank to back him up. It's no coincidence that he favors a shield in combat; deep down, Vexen is a complete coward. Back him into a corner and take away his safety nets, and suddenly begging and grovelling aren't underneath him at all.
History: Vexen's experience as a scientist goes way back. Before Vexen, there was Even, a scientist working under the supervision of Ansem the Wise. Even was a man of great status, well-respected, and evidently trustworthy enough to be the caretaker of the orphaned Ienzo, whom Ansem adored; seeing potential in the child, Even was keen on having Ienzo follow in his footsteps, and Ienzo became an apprentice scientist as well. Life was good up until Even happened to meet a boy named Ventus; though their encounter was brief, Even and his unnaturally sharp perception picked up on the fact that Ventus's heart was not only devoid of darkness, but the darkness had been extracted on purpose--which seemed impossible.
Intrigued, Even felt compelled to study the complexities of the heart; by the time a mysterious young man named Xehanort came into Ansem's care, Even seemed obsessed. His main interest was memory, especially in the case of Xehanort's amnesia, and even after Ansem the Wise banned his apprentices from experimenting with the darkness of one's heart, Even continued his research in secret. Spurred on by Xehanort and Ienzo both, the experiments took a turn for the unethical, and if they ever realized just how dangerous their experiments were, it was too late; Xehanort lost his heart, and Even followed him into darkness, along with the other four apprentices of Ansem the Wise. These were the original six of Organization XIII, and Vexen, as he was now called, was fourth amongst them.
As the Organization began to grow and amass members, Vexen spent his time dedicating himself to scientific work. Somewhere along the line he became proficient at cloning, an art that Xemnas soon took interest in as well. Under Xemnas's orders, Vexen started the Replica Project, meant to ensure that the Organization would not only have a fair supply of Keyblade wielders, but that they were guaranteed to have Sora's power for themselves whether Sora (or even Roxas) wished to cooperate or not. The first Replica that Vexen took pride in, No. i, became Xion; the others, requiring further refinement, remained unused but on deck for whenever Vexen could find a use for them. As Vexen and five other Organization members were sent to Castle Oblivion, the Organization's new outpost, the Replica Project had to be transferred there.
To Vexen's great dismay, Marluxia, one of the lowest-ranked neophytes, was named head of the castle instead of one of the three senior members (Vexen, Lexaeus, and Zexion). Unbeknownst to all but Axel, Xemnas had purposefully set this up as a test of loyalty; in giving Marluxia a position of power, Xemnas allowed treasonous sentiments to manifest, and planted Axel at Oblivion to keep an eye on things -- and to eliminate any traitors that showed their true colors. With his mission in mind, Axel pretended to go along with Marluxia's rebellion. A rift began to grow between the neophytes of the castle (Larxene, Axel, and Marluxia) and the seniors, and in no time they turned against each other, with Sora and Riku getting caught up as pawns in their feud.
Through battling Riku, Vexen gathered enough data to create an exact Replica of him using one of the Replicas he'd brought with him to Castle Oblivion. Vexen had the Replica battle Riku, and later, Sora, but the replica did not succeed in overpowering either of them. Seeing this as an opportunity to assert his dominance, Marluxia threatened to report the failure to Xemnas, effectively blackmailing Vexen into cooperation. Marluxia then sent the Chilly Academic off to confront and eliminate Sora directly--but in meeting Sora, Vexen began to tell him of Marluxia's plans, challenging Sora's memories of Naminé and, if given time, might have even revealed the existence of Roxas. He was cut short by the arrival of Axel, sent by Marluxia to "eliminate the traitor." Vexen's pleas for his life fall on deaf ears, and with a snap of the fingers, everything he ever worked for went up in flames.
Sample Post He felt...numb.
It was a difficult sensation to explain, even though it was hardly new to Vexen. Something deeper than apathy, something greater than ennui; it stayed in the back of his mind constantly, following his conscious thoughts like a shadow. It was the double-edged sword, the abstract that both killed the pang of failure and smothered the elation of success. He could have created the greatest scientific marvel the world had ever seen, and yet...he'd feel nothing. Nothing but the emptiness where joy or sorrow should have been, and the question...'why?'
It didn't even make any sense -- that was the worst part. Losing his heart should have brought some kind of sense of contentment, of...fulfillment. After all, it's what I've wanted, isn't it? he'd wonder, the idea coming in more of a nebular concept form than as a coherent sentence. Freedom from guilt. Freedom from inhibitions and the emotional barriers that prevented him from going forward with the most morally-questionable of his experiments. Freedom to pursue scientific endeavors without second-guessing himself. Yes, that little angel on his shoulder was finally gone. So...
Why?
Why was it all so...so...
Depressing wasn't even the right word, but it was close enough. This was why he kept so busy all the time, either in his lab or in his bureaucratic dealings with the rest of the Organization. He had no time to dwell on such existential ponderings when there was science to be done. But the same act that had freed him from his personal limits also took away his passion for science; now, the experiments he had run before with great zeal and excitement, he performed out of simple necessity or habit. This was why he kept busy: because in the moments when he was alone, when he had nothing else on which to concentrate, his mind would drift back to the question. More than 'why?' More than 'what's the point?'
Where is my heart?
